Russell Gates and his twin brother were born on Vulcan while their parents, members of the Federation's diplomatic corps, were assigned there as part of a Federation sponsored cultural exchange program. Both parents lost their lives in a tragic transporter accident six months after the twins' birth. Their only living relative was their paternal grandmother who resided on Earth.
