Farragut Films’ set construction falls within the responsibility of John Broughton, Sr. He oversees the execution of set construction from blueprints and measurements provided. Designing, planning, and re-engineering something to be made has always intrigued John Sr. His experience goes back to 1964 while he was in high school. He remodeled a basement room at his parent’s house. Later, when he was married, he completely remodeled his house, as well as subsequent homes.

John Sr. describes wood-working as keeping his mind active. In 1986, when his father was President of the Cincinnati Carvers Guild, his father purchased John Sr.’s membership in the club and gave him a carving knife. When he finished his first carving (a snake letter-opener made of cedar), he was hooked on carving. Twenty years later, John Sr. followed in his father’s footsteps and became President of the club. Soon after, John Sr. joined the Cincinnati Woodworkers Club and the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild. Working with wood and all aspects of it seems to be his calling in life.

He has built numerous Star Trek-related props used in the show, as well as our sets (e.g., ship corridor, turbolift, shuttlecraft, transporter console, crew cabin, Captain’s Quarters). His workshop alone is large enough to put the bridge set in it! John Sr. has a plethora of tools ranging from a wood planer, two wood lathes, band saw, table saw, jigsaw, drill press, belt sander, router, and an assortment of hand tools (circular saw, drill, hand sander, etc.). John Sr. possesses the necessary woodworking equipment, as well as the knowledge and expertise for Farragut Films’ set construction. In addition to building Starships, John Sr. also plays the recurring character of the cantankerous Commodore Broughton!
