Russell Gates and his twin brother were born on Vulcan while their parents, members of the Federation's diplomatic corps, were assigned there as part of a Federation sponsored cultural exchange program. Both parents lost their lives in a tragic transporter accident six months after the twins' birth. Their only living relative was their paternal grandmother who resided on Earth. Unfortunately, she was only able to care for one of the boys. Believing it to be the only logical course of action, the Vulcan family chose to adopt Russell, ensuring a good home and a prime education.

His well diversified talents often bring him a wide variety of duties, ranging from a communications officer on the bridge to maintenance in Main Engineering.
